The Story of a Passion
When the late Italo Zingarelli, a former boxer and film producer, bought the Rocca delle Macie estate in Tuscany's Chianti Classico district back in 1973, he embarked on a new career as one of Tuscany's more unlikely wine producers. The Zingarelli family left nothing to chance in their quest to transform this 14th century farmstead into a stellar Tuscan wine estate. Today, under the direction of Italo's son Sergio, Rocca delle Macie is among the Chianti region's top producers, with distribution in 41 countries worldwide. Rocca delle Macie must be one of the most festive wineries in all Tuscany. Throughout the year, the estate plays host to a series of high-profile events, including cooking classes, an annual international contest for aspiring young opera singers, a hot air balloon festival, a photography competition and an amateur bicycle rally through the local vineyards. Guided tours and tastings are available year round at the estate by appointment – allow approximately one hour for the full tour and a tasting of three wines. The estate's wine, olive oil, grappa and honey are available for purchase at the on-site shop, open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Farm holidays are available at the Zingarelli family's nearby Riserva di Fizzano property, situated 12 miles north of Siena and 30 miles south of Florence amid the vineyards and olive groves of the scenic Chianti Classico district. A charmingly restored medieval hilltop village, Riserva di Fizzano comprises 21 elegantly furnished apartments with original floors paved in fired brick, vaulted wood-beamed ceilings and large fireplaces.
