The House Where Barolo Was Born
For an illustration of Piedmontese winemaking past and present, one need look no further than the Marchesi di Barolo estate. The origins of Marchesi di Barolo are almost as ancient as Barolo itself, dating back to the 12th century when the land-owning Falletti family of Barolo received titles of nobility. Successive generations of Fallettis went on to develop a sterling reputation for the wines of their region. Today the Marchesi di Barolo estate owns approximately 100 acres of vineyard in the Langhe, including over 50% of the historic cru Cannubi – the finest Barolo vineyard of all.Read more about Marchesi di Barolo here.

A guided tour will take you through the estate’s historic cellars, where fermentation and aging takes place. The pride of the Marchesi di Barolo cellars lies in the extraordinary library of older vintage Barolos. Some 20,000 bottles are housed in the collection, which features every vintage of the 20th century plus great vintages from the previous 100 years. (The oldest bottle is an 1859 Barolo Cannubi.) At the conclusion of the tour, you’ll be invited to taste a specially selected Marchesi di Barolo wine, and a more comprehensive tasting is offered for a fee of 3 euros per person. Please allow 30 minutes for the tour.

Savor the finest in regional gastronomy at the winery’s onsite restaurant, serving traditional Piedmontese cuisine matched with Marchesi di Barolo’s finest wines. Before departing, browse the shop for the best local products and estate wines.

While in the region, don’t miss the Castle of Barolo and the Castle of Grinzane Cavour, which houses a regional enoteca and the Museum of Wine. A trip to the historical city of Alba, known for its churches and museums, is also highly recommended.
