Piedmont is a land of firsts in more ways than one. Birthplace of Italian unification in 1861, it gave a newly united Italy its first king and, for a few years, its first capital -- Turin.

Turin is a good starting point for any visitor to Piedmont. Highlights include a wealth of baroque churches, palaces, piazzas and museums. As Turin is the home of Fiat, Italy's automotive giant, no visit would be complete without a stop at the city's auto museum, a splendid homage to the design talents of Fiat, Ferrari, Bugatti and Alfa Romeo.

From Turin it's just a short drive south to the wine country of the Langhe with its charming villages, country inns and enotecas showcasing the area's wines. In October the town of Alba hosts a white truffle festival, a high-spirited celebration of the gastronomic delicacy for which the area is famed.

Travel northwest from Turin to the Valle d'Aosta and you will encounter some of the finest ski resorts Italy has to offer. Courmayeur is Italy's oldest ski resort and one of its most fashionable. In summer this area attracts hikers and climbers in droves. Northeast of Turin lies Lake Maggiore. With its magnificent baroque palazzi, luxurious lakeside hotels and stunning scenery, Lake Maggiore has long been a magnet for the well-heeled European traveler.

In short, no matter when you are in Piedmont, there is never a shortage of things to see and do.
